The EmberApp was created to help people with disabilities prepare for emergency situations, particularly fire. The creation of the App, and the wider EMBER project, is in direct response to the 2019/2020 summer bushfires where 80% of the Shoalhaven region was burned or impacted. Feedback from two Australian Royal Commissions into bushfires and the disability sector also identified the need for emergency preparedness in the disability sector.
Key users of the App will be people living with disability, their carers, family members and wider support networks. The App allows individuals to store important information on phones or devices in case of evacuation. It includes what to bring, how to go, where to stay and who to contact. These items are important for individuals living with mobility and anxiety issues along with individuals who require medical appliances and life-sustaining medications.
The App is created using Plain English for greater accessibility, covering information on bushfires, emergency agencies, evacuation points and news sources. Communication Boards are also provided for those who are non-verbal.
App participants will also receive a backpack that contains basic items and a checklist covering what to take in emergencies.
